History and Library Collections

The University Library in Zadar was founded in 1956, in the year when the Faculty of Philosophy started to work. Already in the 1970s it was apparent that the Library would soon outgrow its space due to the rapid growth of its collections and the increase in the number of patrons. Thus at the beginning of the 1980s it moved to the current premises.

The Library collections presently exceed 122,000 volumes (monographs and periodicals), primarily serve the needs of the University's undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the researchers and scientists. In addition to 97,000 volumes of national and international monographs (manuals, coursebooks, encyclopaedias, lexicons, dictionaries, etc.) and about 25,000 volumes of periodicals, the library also has in its possession a manuscript collection of around 600 volumes – master's and doctoral dissertations written at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar (The University of Zadar) and Zagreb.

The Library owns about  760 national and 700 international journals, including 183 current national titles and 180 international ones.

The majority of the collections are located at the Central Library depository, and in the departmental libraries. The Library is structured according to the needs of the study programmes. The collections contain the literature in the areas of Anglophone Studies, Anthropology, Archeology, Economics, Philosophy, Geography, German Studies, Information Science, Classical Philology, Medicine, Pedagogy, Agriculture, Maritime Studies, Art History, History, Transportation, Psychology, Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies, Sociology, and Tourism. The collections will grow and with the development of scientific and research activities at the University of Zadar and in accordance with the needs of all patrons of the University Library.

The Library collections also include private collections of our renowned scholars such as Petar Skoko, Žarko Muljačić, Nikola Majnarić, dr Ivan Grgić, dr Marijan Tkalčić, dr Nikolaj Fjodorovič Preobraženski, dr Duje Rendić-Miočević, dr Ivo Petricioli, and others.

The mission of the University Library is to provide access to all available information sources relevant for the University community, and to provide all library services in support of education, research and teaching.
