The renowned Austrian publishing house Praesens Verlag in Vienna has published the volume Kulturen in Kontakt: Kroatien – Österreich, edited by Martina Mayer and Melanie Peraić. The book contains a collection of academic contributions dealing with the historical, linguistic and cultural interactions between Austria and Croatia, written by university professors from two partner institutions: the Department of German Studies at the University of Zadar and the Institute of Translation Studies at the University of Innsbruck.
The published contributions offer valuable insights into past and present aspects of cross-border relations, focussing on linguistic, cultural and artistic interdependencies that have developed over long historical periods.

The book also contains an interview by Martina Mayer with the literary translator Stjepanka Pranjković.
The publication was financially supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum Zagreb, the Research Office of the University of Innsbruck, the Faculty of Philology and Cultural Studies of the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Translation Studies of the University of Innsbruck.
The successful co-operation between the Department of German Studies at the University of Zadar and the Institute of Translation Studies at the University of Innsbruck was initiated by Assoc. Prof. Helga Begonja, PhD, and Martina Mayer, PhD. This partnership has already led to a number of joint academic initiatives.
In the summer semester of the 2020/2021 academic year, Austrian academics held virtual lectures in the field of translation studies for teachers and students at the University of Zadar as part of the CEEPUS network TRANS – Transcultural Communication and Translation. In the following academic year (2021/2022), professors from Zadar gave virtual guest lectures at the University of Innsbruck as part of the guest lecture series on Croatian-Austrian cultural contact. In the winter semester 2022/2023, a two-day Translating Europe workshop was held at the University of Zadar with guest experts from Austria, which was supported by the European Commission.
In the academic year 2024/2025, the publication of Kulturen in Kontakt: Kroatien – Österreich marks another milestone in this fruitful academic exchange. The cooperation will continue within the framework of the CEEPUS TRANS network and the ERASMUS+ programme.
