Summer School in Latin Epigraphy – Zadar 2019

Venue: Zadar, Mihovila Pavlinovića 1, room 2.3

From August 27th to September 5th 2019 the Department of Classical Philology and the Department of History at the University of Zadar (Croatia) will be organizing international "Summer School in Latin Epigraphy – Zadar 2019".

The school is intended for graduate and PhD students and postdoc applicants, both from Croatia and abroad, although undergraduate students can apply as well, and the expected number of participants is 20. The school has various aims: to facilitate reading and understanding of Latin inscriptions (either from Roman age or from later periods) as well as enable students to independently analyze and interpret texts, while placing them in historical and social contexts. At the end of the School participants will present an essay on one of the more complex monuments, demonstrating their ability to master appropriate scholarly and scientific methodology, which will also be rewarded with a Certificate of participation.

The programme will include lectures of prominent scholars (both on the basics of epigraphy and on scientific interpretations of monuments) as well as group and independent exercises on specific monuments in contemporary setting of Croatian cities and their cultural institutions (Zadar, Split, Podgrađe, Nin), which is usually unavailable for students attending regular classes. The participants will also be introduced to other epigraphies through lectures on glagolitic alphabet and inscriptions in that ancient Croatian script, which makes this school unique in its scope.

The lecturers will be from Croatia (universities of Zadar, Pula and Split), Italy (Trieste), Austria (Graz) and Germany (Flensburg) and lectures and exercises will be in English. All lecturers are renowned experts in Latin epigraphy, which will ensure the best transfer of knowledge to the participants. More information about lecturers click here.
