The Department of Sociology at the University of Zadar was founded in 1976 as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zadar. Its beginnings were marked by recognition for research in the field of sociology of religion. In the early 1980s, with its module „The organisor of cultural activities“, the sociology programme in Zadar focused on cultural policies. In the late 1990s and beginning of the 21st century there was intense research in the field of the sociology of youth, women and lifestyles. Mixed methods approaches were used for empirical research in these fields. Since 2003 the Department of Sociology has been a unit within the integrated University of Zadar. As of 2005 study programmes organised along Bologna reform guidelines have been introduced.
